Terms of Service

Last updated November 1, 2026

The short version

  • If your school has signed an agreement with us, that agreement comes first. These terms cover anything it doesn’t.
  • Professors and students own what they write and upload. We use it only to run Verela for their course, and student work is never used to train AI models.
  • Jot and the grading tools use AI, which can make mistakes. Professors make the final call on grades.
  • Don’t use bots to do assignments, share readings you don’t have the right to share, or copy Verela to build a competing product.

1. Who we are

These terms are between you and Verela (“we” or “us”), the maker of the Verela learning tool. They apply to getverela.com, app.getverela.com and the Verela app inside your school’s learning management system (together, “Verela”). By using Verela, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy.

If your school or institution has signed an agreement with us, that agreement controls wherever it differs from these terms.

2. Who can use Verela

  • Instructors (“professors”) and students at schools that have set up Verela, and anyone trying the public demo.
  • Students use Verela through their school. Students under 18 may use Verela only through a school that has set it up.
  • Verela is not meant for children under 13.
  • If you set up Verela for a school or course, you confirm that you’re allowed to do that on the school’s behalf.

3. Accounts and access

You open Verela from your school’s learning management system, which signs you in using LTI 1.3. Keep your school login private. You’re responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else is using it, tell us right away at hello@getverela.com.

4. Your content

“Your content” means the readings, links, questions, chat messages, quiz and live-check answers, and anything else you put into Verela.

  • You keep ownership. You give us permission to store, copy, process and display your content only as needed to run Verela for your course and school. That includes sending it to the service providers listed in our Privacy Policy, such as our AI provider, for that purpose.
  • No AI training. We don’t use student work to train AI models, and our AI provider’s business terms don’t allow it to train on what we send.
  • Readings. Professors must have the right to use any reading they paste or upload, for example because it’s openly licensed, their own work, covered by their school’s license, or allowed as fair use. Readings are shown only to students in that course. If a reading sits behind a publisher’s sign-in, link to it instead of copying it.
  • The shared library. When a professor shares an assignment to the library, other professors at their school, or at every school using Verela if they choose that, can see and copy its concepts and questions. The reading’s text is shared only when the professor marks it as openly licensed or their own work.
  • We may remove content that breaks these terms or the law.

5. AI features

Jot, question drafting, grading checks, class briefings and answers to analytics questions are produced by AI. AI can be wrong, incomplete or inconsistent.

  • Professors can review and change any grade. Signs that a bot was used are flagged for the professor but never change a grade on their own.
  • Jot is designed to know only what a student taught it, but that’s a design goal, not a guarantee.
  • Don’t rely on anything Verela’s AI says as professional, legal, medical or financial advice.

6. Rules for using Verela

You agree not to:

  • use bots, scripts, AI tools or another person to complete assignments for you, or get around paste blocking, timers or other assignment settings, unless your professor has given you an accommodation;
  • share your access with others or submit someone else’s work as your own;
  • upload content that is unlawful, infringes someone else’s rights, or contains malware;
  • scrape, copy, frame or reverse engineer Verela, or use Verela or the demo to build or improve a competing product;
  • probe, scan or test Verela’s security, or overload or interfere with it, without our written permission (if you find a security problem, please email us);
  • put sensitive information into Verela that it doesn’t need, such as Social Security numbers, health information or financial account details.

7. The public demo

Anyone can try a demo course with sample students from our website. Demo courses are deleted automatically about 24 hours after they start. Don’t enter real student information or anything private into the demo.

8. Copyright complaints

If you believe something in Verela infringes your copyright, email hello@getverela.com with:

  • your name and contact details;
  • the work you believe is infringed, and where the material appears in Verela;
  • a statement that you believe in good faith the use isn’t authorized by you, your agent or the law;
  • a statement that your notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you’re the owner or authorized to act for the owner; and
  • your physical or electronic signature.

We’ll remove material that infringes and may end the access of people who infringe repeatedly.

9. Fees

Pilot courses are free unless we agree otherwise in writing. Paid plans are set out in an order form or agreement with your school.

10. Our property

Verela, the Verela logo, Jot, and the software, designs and content we create belong to us and are protected by law. These terms don’t give you any rights to them other than using Verela as these terms allow. If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without owing you anything.

11. Suspension and ending

You can stop using Verela at any time. We may suspend or end access if you break these terms, if your school’s access ends, or if we need to in order to protect Verela, its users or the law. When access ends, we handle data as described in our Privacy Policy and your school’s agreement with us. Sections 4, 8 and 10 through 15 continue to apply after access ends.

12. Disclaimers

Verela is provided “as is” and “as available.” To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don’t promise that Verela will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that anything its AI produces will be accurate.

13. Limits on liability

To the extent the law allows, we won’t be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data or goodwill, arising from Verela. Our total liability for any claim relating to Verela is limited to the greater of the amount you or your school paid us for Verela in the 12 months before the claim, or $100. Some places don’t allow these limits, so they may not apply to you.

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as Verela changes. If a change is significant, we’ll tell professors and school administrators by email or in the app before it takes effect. The date at the top of this page shows when the terms last changed.

15. Disputes

If you have a concern about Verela, please email us first at hello@getverela.com, and we’ll try to resolve it informally. If you use Verela through a public institution that must follow the law of its own state, that law applies to the extent required.
